The
reason for removing the breast implant may include any of the regular
potential complications, including wrinkling, capsular contracture,
breast asymmetry, and others. The majority of women choose to have
the implant replaced, but there are some women that do not replace
the implant, which may have results similar to those shown to the
right. Women that don't have their breast implants replaced may have
undesirable sagging of their breasts after the removal of the implant.
Recent studies of saline breast implants approved by the Federal Drug Administration showed breast implant removal rates of eight percent at 3 years and twelve to fourteen percent at 5 years. These medical studies also showed breast implant removal rates of twenty three to twenty seven percent at 3 years and twenty eight to thirty percent at 5 years for breast reconstruction patients.
Women with big breast implants, particularly those inserted under and within the breast glands but on top of the chest muscles may have major cosmetic deformities if they choose not to replace the breast implants or to undergo additional reconstructive surgery.
It is important that you speak with your breast augmentation surgeon regarding breast implant removal, and all other breast augmentation risks. You should not make a decision to have a breast augmentation procedure until you have had all of your questions answered and you are 100% comfortable and satisfied.
