Today, consumers have so many options when electing
to have a breast augmentation procedure. There are many different types
of breast implants these days, although Silicon and Saline remain the
most popular and widely used. Most implants are silicone elastomer-shelled.
New reports have concluded that silicone breast implants last on average
for 16 years, while saline breast implants are said to last approximately
11-13 years. Read more about the various breast implant types below.
- Saline Breast Implants
- The filler is sterile saline that should conform to United
States Pharmacopeia (USP) standards for Normal Physiological
Saline (injection grade). The shell for a saline breast implant
has cured polymeric silicones composition, with roughly twenty
percent of finely powdered silica that is bound to the silicone
polymers, and small amounts of smaller silicones. There are
also minute amounts of metals, a metal catalyst, and traces
of evaporating materials, which can be other organic compounds.
- Silicone Breast Implants
- A silicone breast implant has a silicone rubber shell with
the same general composition. There are three types of silicon
breast implants: a single lumen implant, a double lumen implant,
and a double lumen implant with adjustable saline volume. The
silicone gel filler has a composition of silicone oil, with
cured polymeric silicones and also amounts of uncured large
and smaller silicones. The silicone filler also has minute amounts
of metals, including a metal catalyst.
- Other Breast Implant Types
- There are also other breast implant types that are used widely.
An alternative breast implant normally has a silicone rubber
shell with a filler other than saline or silicone. This implant
filler material may be another material other than a gel. The
alternative breast implant option may have an alternative shell
other than one made from silicone rubber.
